It was a gorgeous day at Coombe, the sun was shining and the 1s were eager to extend their winning streak against opponents Portsmouth. With Portsmouth unable to secure a win yet this season, Bristol were feeling confident. The game kicked off and Bristol were hungry for possession, conceding an early free kick with classic Leila pulling the shirt of her winger. Nothing coming from it led to the ball being back up the Portsmouth half with Bristol winning a corner and Hannah just heading it wide. Only ten minutes in and Bristol were continuously pressuring Portsmouth’s defence with a cross by Hannah, Gloria getting a touch but the keeper saving it. Bristol got their first goal from a 25 yard shot from Stella rebounding from the keeper for Anna to catch a magnificent volley hitting the back of the net, 1-0 Bristol. Bristol contended for another chance, starting from their own box with a clearance from a Portsmouth corner taken by Gloria up the line and crossed into Molly who shot just over the bar. In Portsmouth’s box, Gloria was taken down by Portsmouth centre back, winning a penalty for Bristol. Stella takes a cool, calm and collected penalty slotting the ball low to the keepers right, 2-0 Bristol. Bristol win a free kick after Hannah gets fouled 20 yards out, Stella hits the bar- Bristol are hungry for me. Not long after, Bristol are back in Portsmouth’s half with Anna passing the ball across the box for Gloria to slot in bottom right corner, 3-0 Bristol. The fourth and last goal of the first half was secured by Hannah landing a beautiful ball from long range in the back of the Portsmouth net, 4-0 Bristol and the whistle goes for half time.
After an exciting first half, Bill advised the team to retain the ball and focus on the clean sheet and Bristol came back out for the second half confident with 4 goals up. Bristol did well to retain the ball for the second half, leaving Portsmouth with no chance of redemption. The back four, consisting of Lizzie, Webb, Eve, and Leila were relaxed on the ball, recycling it around to retain possession, and patiently waiting to penetrate through Portsmouth’s lines. From a high press from the goal kick, Bella wins the ball down the left hand side crossing it into Gloria who heads it just over the bar. After two promising corners, Bristol kept the pressure on for another goal with a long range shot from Stella just flying over the bar and a corner with Leah not quite managing to get her head on it. The game is near a close and Stella takes another corner from the left for Leah to head into the back of the net, 5-0 Bristol and what a game to watch.
The girls celebrated a great victory and clean sheet, upholding their position at the top of the league. POTM to the well deserved Hannah Goffi who ran tirelessly around midfield causing problems for Portsmouth and creating countless chances for UBWFC. The winning streak lives on and the BUCS domination continues.
